Niger – Uranium

A mine worker walks on the residual dump at the Cominak mine near Arlit on March 8, 2023. The Akouta Mining Company (Cominak), operated in the town of Akokan near Arlit by the French group Areva, now Orano, began its activities in 1978: it closed in 2021 due to the depletion of its reserves after having produced 75,000 tons of uranium.
Its redevelopment at a cost of 150 million euros is underway and should last ten years, followed by at least five years of environmental monitoring. (Photo by OLYMPIA DE MAISMONT / AFP)
